Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine and SLUCare Physician Group (SLUCare), the academic medical group of SSM Health, seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. This is a key academic physician leadership position within the SLUCare Physician Group and SSM Health Medical Group, operating in a highly matrixed environment to advance clinical care, education, training, and research across the region.
The Department of Family and Community Medicine at SLU is nationally recognized for its excellence in academic and clinical family medicine, as well as for its integrated behavioral health care programs. The department played a critical role in the SLU School of Medicine being ranked Tier 1 in Primary Care by U.S. News & World Report in both 2024 and 2025. Additionally, the SLU Family Medicine Division of Research is a national leader in exploring the intersections of behavioral health, addiction, and the social determinants of health. It ranks among the top family medicine departments in the country for research productivity and impact.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with the ability to bring transformational ideas and a clear strategic vision to the Department. The incoming Chair will foster the development of faculty and staff while building strong collaborative relationships with partners across the region. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong academic background and a deep commitment to educational excellence.
The Chair of Family and Community Medicine will report to the Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Christine Jacobs, on matters related to the Department’s academic mission, including education and research. For the Department’s clinical mission, the Chair will report to the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, Dr. Tracey Conti. Both Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Conti are family medicine physicians and former chairs of family medicine departments.

Requirements
Credentials that merit appointment in the School of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
Proven leadership skills in an academic environment, excellence in teaching, clinical practice, program development, and experience in research administration.
Effective use of strong interpersonal and communication skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy, and an approachable servant leadership style.
Demonstrated ability to create a culture of physician engagement, accountability, and shared responsibility for patient safety and quality of care delivered.
Ability to nurture and grow residency and fellowship offerings and programs.
A commitment to wellness and faculty leadership development.
A record of cooperative working relationships with colleagues, including patients, physicians, nurses, administrators, managers, and other colleagues.
Commitment to implement requirements and policies of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), SSM Health, and SLU School of Medicine.
MD, DO, MD/PhD or equivalent and board certification in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Eligibility for an unrestricted Missouri state medical license.
