OB/GYN Laborist

Position Summary:
An OB/GYN Laborist is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who provides inpatient care for women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. Unlike traditional OB/GYNs, laborists work exclusively in hospital settings, offering 24/7 coverage to ensure timely and safe obstetric care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct inpatient obstetric care, including labor management, deliveries (vaginal and cesarean), and postpartum care.
- Perform obstetric triage evaluations and respond to obstetric emergencies.
- Collaborate with nursing staff, midwives, and other physicians to ensure coordinated, high-quality care.
- Cover for community OB/GYNs who are unavailable during their patients’ labor.
- Manage unassigned patients or those without a designated obstetrician.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and help develop labor and delivery protocols.
- Educate residents, medical students, and nursing staff as needed.
Qualifications:
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
- Completion of a 4-year OB/GYN residency program.
- Board certification or eligibility in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- Valid state medical license and DEA registration.
- Advanced training in high-risk obstetrics or maternal-fetal medicine is a plus.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong clinical skills in labor and delivery, including emergency response.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work independently and make critical decisions under pressure.
- Commitment to patient safety and evidence-based care.
Work Schedule:
- Typically shift-based (e.g., 12- or 24-hour shifts), including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Full-time and part-time positions may be available depending on hospital needs.
