Department Overview
The PET/MRI Technologist performs a comprehensive range of PET, MRI and Nuclear Medicine procedures. The PET/MRI Technologist performs PET/MRI, MRI only and Nuclear Medicine examinations, which may be clinical or research in nature, following protocols under the direct or indirect supervision of the Clinical Manager, Radiologists, Residents, Clinical Providers, or Research Providers. The PET/MRI Technologist promotes OHSU's mission statement by delivering high quality, cost effective, family-oriented service. This position helps to create a collaborative environment by integrating education, research and clinical leadership. The PET/MR Technologist will work with infant, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.Function/Duties of Position
Imaging (PET, MRI, Nuclear Medicine):
- Prepares various isotopes for patient administration.
- Utilizes applications of PET/MRI (Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to optimize each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the least discomfort to the patient.
- Assists the physician in specialized procedures.
- Provides quality imaging applications, using optimal skills and knowledge of equipment.
- Evaluates normal/abnormal anatomy and any related abnormalities or artifacts for presentation to Radiologist using knowledge and principals of Nuclear Medicine, PET and MRI physics. o Recognizes and reports significant situations relating to patient care.
- Participates in research protocols under the supervision of providers and manager.
- Performs general nuclear medicine procedures in accordance with operational need.
- Performs quality diagnostic studies with accuracy and efficiency. Positions patients for MRI, PET and Nuclear Medicine examinations with a high regard for their safety, care, and comfort.
- Prescreens patients and all related personnel in regards to MRI compatibility standards for safe entry into the static magnetic field. If there is any question regarding MRI compatibility, the MRSO or Radiologist shall be consulted.
- Understand the differences in Implant Compatibility between field strengths.
- Understands MR physics with the ability to implement change in imaging parameters on a case-by-case basis to maximize imaging quality. Understands normal anatomical cross-sectional images. Must be able to decide on the completeness and quality of the patient's studies when working independently of a Radiologist.
- Prepares and instructs patients for diagnostic study using age-appropriate communication skills.
- Obtains protocol for each patient as required for each study.
- Optimizes each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the least discomfort to the patient.
- Must be able to perform all ranges of exams after completion of technical competencies.
- Demonstrates competent knowledge and skills in the use of all MRI, PET and Nuclear Medicine scanners and peripheral equipment within the department.
- Continues to stay current in regards to new MRI, PET and Nuclear Medicine technology, hardware and software upgrades.
- Knowledge of compatibility and safety of equipment used for patient care inside the scan suite. (O2, monitoring, wheelchairs, stretchers and IV stands).
- Performs daily and weekly MRI, PET, Nuclear Medicine and Hot Lab QC and be able to assess results.
- Participates in clinical research studies.
- Provides for personal and patient care and safety using professional judgment in accordance with written standards to avoid injury to self and others.
- Responsible to adhere to all established National Patient Safety Goals, and report errors or unsafe conditions to manager and the OHSU Event Reporting (Patient Safety Intelligence).
- Follows universal precautions for blood and body fluids, protecting patients and staff.
- Works in a safe manner by maintaining a clean work environment. Reports injuries to manager.
- Starts I.V.'s on patients and injects contrast material and/or radiopharmaceuticals. Proper use of sterile technique, supplies and proper labeling technique. Uses prescribed dosage of contrast and/or radiopharmaceuticals.
- Maintains MRI Safety and Screening compliance per OHSU policy
- Screen patients and ancillary staff for appropriate and safe access to the MRI suite safety zone.
- Positions the patient to prevent injury by touching the bore of the magnet, skin to skin contact, and proper use of imaging coils.
- Explains the procedure to the patient to assure clear answers to their questions and concerns to allay any anxiety and assure patient confidence.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved magnetic resonance imaging course that meets current qualifications to apply for and take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) board exam in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) upon hire. Must be ARRT (MR) certified by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists, or ARMRIT American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists within 6 months of hire.
- In addition to the above MRI qualifications, the technologist must also be ARRT (N) registered or NMTCB registered to practice Nuclear Medicine and PET.
- Must be licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging.
- Must have current approved BLS card.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year hospital experience in either Nuclear Medicine including PET/CT and/or MRI.
- Documented or demonstrated technical competencies that include at least 6 months of full time clinical experience in MRI.
- MRI and/or PET/MRI experience preferred
- Experience working in a Level I / II Trauma Center, or equivalent experience.
- Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) credential
- Radiation Safety (RS) credential

This is a fulltime position. Employee may be required to work overtime. This position is eligible for medicaland other benefits. This position works in a busy environment with frequent interruptions, multiple demandsand continuous interaction with patients and other medical professionals. It requires being exposed tochemical solutions, and human tissue/fluids. Benefits:
