Job Summary
The Respiratory Therapist (RRT), serving as a Polysomnographic Technologist (R.PSG.T.), is responsible for performing both routine and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the areas of cardiopulmonary and sleep medicine. This position supports patients of all ages in both inpatient and outpatient settings within the Sleep Lab.
The RRT./R.PSG.T. obtains, reviews, and interprets clinical data to assess the need for and response to respiratory and sleep-related interventions. Responsibilities include responding to cardiopulmonary emergencies, providing airway maintenance, and administering manual and mechanical ventilatory support using a variety of devices. The therapist also delivers medical gases, humidity therapy, inhaled aerosol medications, and bronchial hygiene therapies as prescribed.
This position involves instructing patients, families, and continuing care providers on respiratory procedures and the proper use of equipment and supplies. The RRT./R.PSG.T plays a key role in restoring respiratory and pulmonary function, alleviating discomfort, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and institutional requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct and score polysomnographic (sleep) studies in accordance with clinical protocols
- Perform respiratory care treatments and monitor patient responses
- Respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies and provide airway management
- Operate and maintain mechanical ventilators and related respiratory equipment
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers on respiratory procedures and equipment use
- Maintain accurate documentation and compliance with all regulatory and departmental standards
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position
- Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (R. PSG T.)California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
- American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
- Must have a complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practice, principles, and techniques of patient care related to the area of expertise
- Must be proficient in all aspects of polysomnographic recordings, including routine and complex recordings, CPAP/ BiPAP titrations, PES MSLT, NPT, HST, and Portable Sleep Testing recordings
- Must have the ability to measure and accurately apply disc electrodes to those predetermined areas, utilizing knowledge of the International 10/20 system
- Must know electrode placement to accurately monitor physiological artifacts and apply additional electrodes
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in the area of expertise to ensure the provision of the highest quality patient care services
- Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of the laboratory's practices and protocols related to performing polysomnographic procedures and appropriate equipment use
- Must be proficient in scoring polysomnographic records according to AASM criteria and Laboratory guidelines
- Must be competent in using computerized polysomnography equipment
- Develop a working knowledge of the current database to accurately maintain the clinical database and archive digital studies to storage media
- Must have the ability to function as a "team player," being considerate and flexible, taking the needs of your peers into consideration
- Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained and a professional, respectful hospital, clinic, or laboratory environment exists at all times
- Ability to maintain composure, efficiency, and a positive, customer-service-oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with patients who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
- Accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments in an effective and efficient manner
- Organizes and prioritizes assignments to complete work in a timely and efficient manner, particularly when there are changes in workload or assignments. Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures
- Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations, and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or for whom English may be a second language
- Provide explanations (within the scope of practice) to patients about upcoming exams and procedures, using terminology and phrasing that is responsive to and appropriate for the patient's age, language skills, and emotional state
- Anticipate patients' needs and, within scope or practice and authority, take initiative to meet those needs, keep patients informed about actions to be taken
- Problem-solving skills to independently define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve problems; create a viable solution and take the action necessary to implement it; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
- Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to appropriately seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
- Working knowledge of medical terminology to accurately transcribe physicians' orders
- Working knowledge of departmental and system policies and procedures
- Ability to efficiently use the computer system to retrieve pertinent patient information through the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Ability to efficiently use computer systems and maintain a clinical database
- If applicable, monitor and educate on home ventilators, BIPAP, CPAP, etc., in conjunction with the physician, and assist in equipment settings
- Monitor ventilator parameters as ordered, documenting outcomes and assisting patients and families.
- If applicable, perform various Respiratory procedures safely and effectively when needed in the department
- Chart and record patient response in EMR (Electronic Health Record)
- Monitor patient response or adverse reaction to procedure, mode of ventilation, oxygenation, or activities based on established criteria for the identification of undesirable side effects
- Report findings
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years working as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with adults and pediatrics
- 2 years of experience working as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
Key Responsibilities
- 80% - CONDUCTING PATIENT PROCEDURES
- 20% - LABORATORY SUPPORT ACTIVITIES
Department Overview
The Sleep Disorders Laboratory is part of the UCDMC Sleep Disorders Center, an American Academy of Sleep Medicine-accredited facility. The Laboratory is managed by the Neurodiagnostic Services Director in collaboration with the Medical Director. The overall clinical supervision of the laboratory is under the Neurodiagnostic Supervisors.
